… And GRNC\u00a0is disappointed to report that House Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have let us all down. Despite your messages explaining the glaring problems with this bill, and insisting that they reject it, the committee voted last week in favor of the bill and now it is advancing to the Rules Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore, it is now up to members of the Rules committee to stop this terrible bill. We can only hope that they will be more responsive to gun owners (who sent them to Raleigh in the first place), and stop it.<\/span><\/div>\n

H712<\/a>\u00a0(Disposition of Unclaimed or Seized Firearms), was introduced carrying the names of several ideologically anti-gun sponsors, the sort whose genuine goal is simply to destroy guns. This bill must not become law, and with your help, GRNC intends to stop it in the Judiciary Committee, where it will receive a hearing, this Friday, at 9:00 AM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redundancy, a Staple of Bureaucracy<\/strong><\/span>
Of course, we\u2019ll all be contacting our elected servants to inform them of their pending mistake and encourage them not to make such an error. And when we do, it will probably be embarrassing for the bill\u2019s legislative sponsors and supporters to learn that their own legislative body has already passed into law a bill with similar reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In NC\u2019s \u2018Domestic Violence Statutes (50B)\u2019 you\u2019ll find<\/strong><\/span>:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

So, there are already directives for how government-owned guns are to be disposed of. It\u2019s not a stretch to say that existing law could be utilized as-is, or simply tweaked with a new line or two, and presto! No need to ensconce a new way to lose money, and no need for a whole new layer of red tape. But who doesn\u2019t like red tape?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Burning Cash: A Bureaucratic Virtue\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>
But wait, there\u2019s more. If you like the redundancy presented by H712, you\u2019ll also love its ability to burn government assets, costing us all through the purposeful elimination of potential revenue. In its language regarding when and why to destroy a firearm, the bill sets up the false narrative that unless a gun has obvious trade-in value in purchasing firearms for the police, it has no value at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, the bill\u2019s precepts ignore the fact that one man\u2019s refuse is another\u2019s treasure. Firearms that law enforcement may deem valueless, may be quite valuable to collectors and other enthusiasts. The bill essentially forces potential bags of money to be burned. Perhaps NC lawmakers just prefer to grab all their revenue from your paycheck and at the local cash registers where you ante up for Raleigh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

H712 is Anti-Gun\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>
Clearly, there is an anti-gun bias built-in to H712, and surely that is the reason several of the sponsors are known, anti-gun politicians.\u00a0Note that there are no similar rules for the destruction of confiscated automobiles, tools, jewelry, or any other property. If a gun does not seem to have trade-in value, law enforcement ought to turn it over to the state surplus agencies just like all the other property they dispose of<\/strong><\/span>. This bill is just an excuse for law enforcement to destroy\u00a0perfectly good firearms\u00a0<\/em>(a phrase that likely sounds counterintuitive, perhaps absurd, to this bill\u2019s sponsors).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
