In elections, Second Amendment advocates often overlook political races that seem unrelated to the right to keep and bear arms. That is a mistake for two reasons: First, any race that advances the political career of a pro-gun candidate can be useful if it increases the chance of that candidate eventually being elected to higher office. Second, some tasks of offices seemingly unrelated to gun rights might actually have an impact not obvious at first glance.

Gun rights advocates should pay attention to the race for NC State Auditor for both of those reasons. In the Republican primary, the candidate who stands out is Jeff Tarte (voting record: 100%, GRNC ****). During his terms in the NC Senate, Tarte not only earned a 100% pro-gun voting record, but repeatedly sponsored legislation to expand the rights guaranteed North Carolinians under the Second Amendment. In addition to being a worthy candidate, Tarte will use the powers of the office not only to eliminate governmental waste and fraud (which are typical in leftist bureaucracy) but, more importantly, he has vowed to audit urban sheriffs using their offices to obstruct issuance of concealed handgun permits.
