 Welcome to “Checkpoint Raleigh.” You are now leaving the American sector. Estella Patterson, chief of the Stasi…er…Raleigh Police Department…has decided she wants to require merchants in the city’s Glenwood South area to start searching patrons using metal detectors. (Rumor has it, she will next want random strip-searches on Raleigh streets.)
 Her scheme would, of course, prevent concealed handgun permit-holders from carrying firearms for self-protection in what even Raleigh admits is an increasingly dangerous part of town. You see, Patterson says there are sometimes 12,000 people crammed onto the streets, outside of bars, restaurants, and clubs in Glenwood South. So to stop all this rowdiness, she wants to require business owners install metal detectors at the entrances.
“It’s an effective means to keep guns out of the area,” she insisted. And, of course, the guns she wants to go after are yours.
Leftist Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin enthusiastically embraced the idea of searching citizens, saying: “Can we make that requirement in the hospitality district?” Wistfully, Patterson sighed, “I would love that.” City and police attorneys are now checking to see if they can legally require business owners to install the metal detectors because, after all, if they can’t officially prohibit lawful carry, they will just make it impossible.

It appears that the latest scheme to hamstring lawful concealed handgun permit-holders is to require merchants in Glenwood South to search citizens using metal detectors. Apparently, the “City of Oaks” has become the “City of Wokes.”
This hairbrained scheme has all of the flavor of East German checkpoints and the Stasi dragging people away to torture rooms. In the unlikely event your lawyers decide it is constitutional, I will not only make it my mission to remove you from office, but will also begin advising merchants in Glenwood South that it will be a cold day in hell before I frequent their businesses. I have every confidence that when the dust settles, you will be persona non grata even to the left.
