GOOD NEWS IN TWO COUNTIES

Good News from Guilford County!

Last Thursday, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners met to discuss, among other things, restricting the lawful carry of concealed firearms on certain county properties. During the debate, the commission recognized the risks of enacting tedious, hard-to-follow local ordinances. They expressed concern that a patchwork of restrictions was likely to make accidental felons out of otherwise law-abiding citizens.

A final vote is still required, but for the first vote on the topic, the commission came down on the side of reason. They voted 7-2 against enacting local restrictions against law-abiding, background-checked concealed carry permit-holders. They should be applauded for this!

Good News from Rowan County!

On Tuesday, the Rowan County Planning Board Subcommittee also discussed lawful concealed carry. Recommendations still must pass through the full Planning Board, and then the full County Commission, but they are recommending that Rowan County simply align itself with state law by not enacting local ordinances against lawful concealed carry in county buildings and parks. This is great news!

Great Examples for Other Communities!

Leadership in these two counties deserve a hearty “thank you!” for their stance. It’s nice to see Guilford County, and perhaps Rowan County, joining a select group of communities that will not restrict the rights of its citizens. Other communities should take note.

It’s Not Over Yet - Your Positive Feedback Is Needed

Thursday’s vote in Guilford County was not unanimous, so the commissioners must conduct a second vote on this issue before it is finally decided. The recommendations by the Subcommittee in Rowan County will be passed along for more deliberation, and will ultimately stand for final consideration by the full County Commission. Things are looking pretty good for gun rights in these two counties, but the fight isn’t over yet.

When politicians get it wrong, we surely let them know—we let ‘em have it! This time, politicians in two counties actually got it right, and they deserve our thanks and encouragement. See the two “Immediate Action” sections below to see how you can quickly and easily deliver the encouragement that is needed. It looks as though we’ve won a couple of great battles, but they’re not over quite yet. Let’s give credit to those who deserve it, and let’s finish strong!

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: “Thank You for Standing for Gun Rights!”

Dear Guilford County Commissioner,

I have just been informed that the Guilford County Commission has voted 7-2 in favor of gun rights, and I am writing to deliver a hearty “thank you!"

A patchwork of “gun-free zones” would have served only to make accidental felons out of otherwise peaceful, law-abiding citizens, while doing nothing to ensure anyone’s safety. The majority vote of the Commission has expressed respect for gun rights, and for the voters of Guilford County. Again, thank you for doing the right thing!

When this matter comes up for a final vote, I encourage the commissioners who have already voted to recognize gun rights to do so once again. I also encourage Commissioners Coleman and Cashion to reconsider their position, and vote in favor of peaceful, law-abiding Guilford County concealed carry permit-holders, and other voters who support gun rights.

I will continue to monitor this issue via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Sincerely,

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: “Please Continue to Stand for Gun Rights”

Dear Rowan County Commissioner,

I have just been informed that the County Planning Subcommittee is recommending against the enactment of tedious and risky county ordinances that would restrict law-abiding concealed carry permit-holders in Rowan County. I am writing to thank the Subcommittee members, and to express my strong support for their recommendation. I would also like to encourage all of the county commissioners to take this same reasonable position when this issue comes before them.

Rejecting tricky local ordinances that would endanger Rowan County citizens and visitors is the only wise choice. Indeed, creating a patchwork of “gun-free zones” would serve only to make accidental felons out of otherwise peaceful, law-abiding citizens, while doing nothing to ensure anyone’s safety.

When this matter comes up for further consideration, I strongly encourage the commissioners to accept the recommendations of the County Planning Subcommittee, and by doing so demonstrate your recognition and respect for gun rights, and for the voters of Rowan County.

I will continue to monitor this issue via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Sincerely,
