Judge in State Fair Case Legislates From Bench
Judge Donald Stephens’ decision in the GRNC lawsuit against posting the state fair against concealed carry can best be summarized in his own words: “If I can find a way to interpret the statutes to prohibit concealed handguns in the state fair, I will.”
It was evident to all that Judge Stephens had his mind made up long before the hearing began. When GRNC’s attorney argued, his attitude was nearly contemptuous, and when the Attorney General’s representative argued, Stephens was soothing and supportive as if talking to a pet dog.
The denial today of GRNC’s temporary restraining order was a classic case of legislating from the bench by, perhaps willfully, misinterpreting both the intent of the General Assembly in passing HB 937’s opening of assemblies to concealed carry, and the potential cost to crime victims of not being able to protect themselves against violent predators, as has happened repeatedly in other state fairs, the most recent being last weekend in Arizona.
GRNC is examining our options, including appeal, legislative action, and possibly an open holster demonstration at the fair. Allow me to say what I told conservative talk show host and GRNC supporter Bill LuMaye: “We don’t know yet how we will react to this setback, but I can tell you one thing: Whatever we do will be done to expand the rights of lawful North Carolinians and their ability to protect their families. The left has called it ‘the long march.’ This is our long march.”
GRNC’s operating philosophy: Never give up. Never give in. Never go away.
DON’T BE DISTRACTED FROM ELECTION
HELP ELECT PRO-GUN CANDIDATES
General election candidate evaluations available at: http://www.grnc.org/remember-in-november/grnc-candidate-evaluations-2014
Time to get our eyes back on the ball, folks. GRNC’s “Remember in November” voter guides, covering 350 candidates across NC and where they stand on guns, will provide you a critical resource in determining which legislative candidate will support your rights. GRNC plans to distribute 150,000 such voter guides to gun-owning voters across the state.
But we need you to help distribute those voter guides. Ninety-five thousand (95,000) voter guides will be mailed directly to GRNC members and other gun-owning voters, with others distributed through gun shops, gun shows, gun clubs and people like you who agree to distribute them to civic organizations, clubs, co-workers, friends, relatives and acquaintances.
Can you help distribute voter guides? If so, please let us know by sending an email to DirectorOfDevelopment@GRNC.org. For current members, packets of voter guides are free. For non-members, we will ask you to pay the cost of guides.
HELP MAIL POSTCARD ELECTION ALERTS
Using a huge database of gun-owning voters, the GRNC Political Victory Fund elects pro-gun candidates and defeats anti-gun candidates by sending postcard election alerts into selected races. For that, we need you. The system is simple. The only things required are minimal computer skills and a couple of hours. GRNC-PVF reimburses all expenses.
How it works:
- We email you Word templates for postcards and labels;
- You get Avery standard labels, and take postcards to office supply store for printing, saving all receipts;
- You apply labels and postage to postcards, and mail, and finally;
- GRNC-PVF reimburses your expenses.
Who to contact:
Send an email to GRNC-PVF@GRNC.org and use the subject "GRNC-PVF ALERTS". Please make sure to include your name, full mailing address and both daytime and evening phone numbers. We will then call you to arrange details.
