TOWN COUNCIL PUSHES GUN CONTROL

Summerfield Defies State Law
Several months ago, an alert citizen visiting a public park in Summerfield, NC noticed “Firearms Prohibited” signs that are not in compliance with state law, and he brought the matter to the attention of Summerfield town officials.

Summerfield, a town in Guilford County, has long tried to set itself apart from the Liberal-leaning city of Greensboro, just to its south. Therefore, one might think town leaders would see this as an excellent opportunity to repeal an out-of-date, unnecessary, and most importantly, illegal ordinance, an ordinance which denies citizens their right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, town leaders are seeing this as an opportunity for something else.

Town Council Doubles-Down on Gun Control

Apparently, some on the Town Council believe that getting elected cloaks them in the power to oppress the civil rights of the town's law-abiding citizens and visitors. Believe it or not, the Summerfield Town Council has tentatively approved an ordinance which not only continues the illegal restriction on the lawful possession of firearms in parks, but goes even further and adds similar restrictions for town-owned buildings. This, at a time when the NC General Assembly is poised to seriously consider Constitutional Carry for North Carolina, and see it enacted even through an anticipated Governor Cooper veto!

Nip Gun Control in the Bud
Gun rights supporters: we have an opportunity to nip this penchant for further gun control right in the bud. This Tuesday evening, the Summerfield Town Council will consider their proposed Firearms in Parks ordinance. Please attend. Let's have the council feel a little heat, so perhaps they'll see the light! This will also be an excellent opportunity to let our representatives in the General Assembly know we are serious about enacting constitutional carry by making our collective voices heard in a productive way.

Below, see how you can join with other gun owners to stop this anti-gun push in Summerfield, and further promote gun rights for the whole state.

SUGGESTED PHONE MESSAGE:

I understand you plan to consider a "Firearms in Parks" ordinance at Tuesday's Town Council meeting, and I'm calling to insist that you simply repeal the existing, non-compliant ordinance. The Town of Summerfield should not be restricting the rights of citizens to provide for their own self-defense.  "No Guns" placards are not magic, and do not deter criminal behavior. They only endanger the law-abiding by making them more vulnerable. The voters are watching, and I will be following your actions on this matter through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.  Thank you and have a great day.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: "Vote No on Oppressive Gun Control in Summerfield"

Dear Summerfield Town Councilor:

I'm writing today to express surprise and great disappointment over the anti-gun ordinance the council is  currently considering, an ordinance that will further oppress the civil rights of Summerfield's law-abiding citizens and visitors.

Summerfield's current 'Firearms in Parks' ordinance is not in compliance with state law, and must be repealed. Yet, rather than a repeal of the current ordinance, the council is considering an ordinance that not only leaves the out-of-date regulations in place, but places even greater restrictions on the law-abiding and vulnerable in Summerfield's parks and buildings.

Rather than further alienating Summerfield voters, I recommend you follow the examples set by the towns and counties around you, which are modernizing their firearms laws. Neither the city of Oak Ridge nor the town of Stokesdale restrict the lawful carry of firearms in their parks and buildings. In 2014, Guilford County, itself, repealed restrictions on the lawful concealed carry of handguns in all county parks. Just last year, Rockingham County, just to your north, repealed restrictions on lawful carry of concealed handguns in all county parks and buildings. All over the state, towns and counties are finally coming to recognize and protect the rights of law-abiding citizens. If Summerfield is truly "Respectful of the Past, and Focused on the Future," it should not be moving in the opposite direction.

Concealed carry has been lawful in North Carolina since 1995. In these twenty plus years, North Carolinians have proven themselves safe, sane and sober in their conduct. Today, over 450,000 North Carolinians carry concealed handguns lawfully, and that number continues to grow.

Many of our state's newest gun owners are young women and mothers with children who frequent parks, and rightly desire the ability to protect themselves and their children. What kind of message does the Town Council want to send to these lawful gun owners who only seek to protect the most innocent and most vulnerable among us? “No Guns” signs do not deter criminal behavior and lawful citizens do not contribute to murder, mayhem, and carnage, as naysayers might suggest.

On Tuesday night, advance the fruits of freedom by repealing the out-of-compliance ordinance, and place no further restrictions on Summerfield's citizens.

I will be following your actions on this matter through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,
