GRNC Alert 01-10-15: Town Considers Gun Ban & Victory in Wilson

TOWN PROPOSES GUN BAN

Immediate action is required to squash the gun-ban efforts of village officials in Wesley Chapel (Union County). You may recall that last month, without explanation, village officials discussed a “Dangerous Weapons” ordinance, which quickly morphed into a discussion about a “Concealed Handguns” ban. They don’t seem to realize that gun bans such as this target only sane, sober, law-abiding citizens, while doing nothing to keep those citizens safe from actual lawbreakers.

Once again, GRNC’s Director of Local Government Affairs, supported by local citizens, made clear to the Council such action would not go unchallenged. Although minds were changed at the initial hearing, council members voted only to continue the discussion. This item returns for debate and possible action this coming Monday. Below, find more details about the meeting, so you can attend and stand up for your gun rights.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!

Let council members in Wesley Chapel know that you won’t stand for their denying your right to defend your family in and around public buildings, while simultaneously causing citizens to be easy pickins’ for those who don’t pay attention to signs and village ordinances.

  • E-mail the Wesley Chapel Council Members. Use the copy-paste e-mail list below, and the copy-paste text under ‘Deliver This Message’.

  • Phone the Wesley Chapel Council Members using the phone numbers provided below. Tell them this:
Hello, I am calling to voice my strong opposition to a ban on concealed handguns in Wesley Chapel’s public buildings. I am a law-abiding gun owner, and would not appreciate being barred from protecting my family against criminals who don’t pay attention to signs and village ordinances. I respectfully ask that the council drop the idea of any gun ban within Wesley Chapel. A gun ban would surely cause me to rethink any time and money that I spend in Wesley Chapel. Thank you.

  • ATTEND  the Village Council Meeting, where they will consider scheduling a Public Hearing on a proposed “Dangerous Weapons” Ordinance. Sign up before the meeting to speak to the Council and demand they not take away your right to defend yourself and your loved ones on public property. Details:

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: “Say ‘No’ to Gun Bans in Wesley Chapel”

Dear Wesley Chapel Mayor and Village Council Members:

Last month you initiated action to draft a “Dangerous Weapons” Ban. Your original draft violated State law, and your new ordinance targets law-abiding citizens who have been background-checked and trained as required by the State of North Carolina. When you revisit this question on Monday night, I must respectfully insist that you permanently table the idea of a gun ban in publicly owned buildings.

The “No Guns” signs that some of you have proposed do nothing but disarm, and therefore endanger, those who actually follow the law.  As has been documented over and over again, criminals (by definition) consistently and repeatedly break the law, while simply ignoring signs and ordinances. Disarming the innocent only puts the innocent in more danger.

Make no mistake: if you enact a concealed handguns ban against law-abiding citizens, I will go out of my way to not patronize businesses in Wesley Chapel. A Village whose government is so bent on curbing freedoms within publicly owned buildings does not deserve the benefit of my family’s patronage.

Don’t be the first, and likely the only municipality to put a “Criminal Empowerment Zone” where one previously did not exist. I will be following the Village Council’s actions closely through alerts issued by Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,

VICTORY IN WILSON

Recently an observant GRNC member noticed the city of Wilson, NC still had non-compliant gun-buster signs posted at the city’s various parks.  After receiving the brush off from park administrators, he next brought the issue to GRNC’s attention. GRNC’s Director of Local Government Affairs emailed city administrators and elected officials, and quicker than handling a hot potato, it was referred to the City Attorney for review.

The Good News
Wilson’s City Attorney concedes Park Signage is non-compliant and must be changed in order to conform, not only to Wilson’s own ordinances, but to State law as well.  The attorney has promised that action will be taken immediately, and he will follow up with GRNC officials when complete.

This favorable outcome and the speed with which it was decided is a testament to you, GRNC members!  You see, politicians have learned that MAX has teeth, and politicians don’t want to get bit. Last year, you may recall, various other towns and cities were adamant they could reject the law, or considered themselves clever enough to circumvent it. Your phone calls, emails, and attendance at their public hearings quickly changed their minds. Wilson city officials didn’t want to “feel the heat!”

Say Thank You!
Please take a moment to contact the City of Wilson Attorney, Mr. Jim Cauley, and thank him for his prompt review and resolution of this matter! Use this e-mail address:  jcauley@cauleypridgen.com, and the message below:

Dear Mr. Cauley,

I’d like to express my gratitude for your prompt review and resolution regarding Wilson’s gun-related signage that is out of compliance with the law. Grass Roots North Carolina recently informed me of your conscientious attention to this issue. It is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
