Permitless Carry Passes NC Senate

SB50 Passes NC Senate 26-18
|
After a bruising 75-minute floor fight, SB 50, “Freedom to Carry NC” passed the NC Senate by a vote of 26-18, with two Republicans excused during the long debate. It was the first time a permitless carry bill had ever been brought to the floor of the Senate, representing a significant reversal of previous history. GRNC Vice President of Operations Sean Sorrentino
was on hand to assist sponsors.
Bill sponsor Sen. Danny Britt (R-Hoke), supported by sponsors Sen. Warren Daniel (R-Buncombe) and Sen.
Eddie Settle (R-Alexander), executed a well-choreographed defense against “the usual suspects” – anti-gun Democrats running a harassment campaign by offering no fewer than 16 amendments to subvert the bill.
Most hypocritical were opening amendments offered by Sen. Mujtaba Mohammed(D-Mecklenburg) for “public safety” in the form of benefits for fallen LEOs, which both passed 46-0 – supported by Democrats, some of whom signed a national “defund police” petition in 2020.
Britt began offering increasing resistance to amendments presented under the fig leaf of enhancing public safety. In response to corrupting amendments offered by Sen. Kandie Smith (D-Edgecomb), Britt countered with a substitute amendment which instead increased penalties for felons committing gun crimes, which passed 46-0.
To nullify anti-gun amendments from Senators Sydney Batch (D-Wake), Woodson Bradley (D-Mecklenburg), Sophia Chitlik
(D-Durham), and Lisa Grafstein (D-Wake), Britt and Daniel offered motions to table the amendments, ending the debates by party line votes and, in one case, having an amendment ruled out of order.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics
Among the many lies, distortions, and irrelevancies put forth by frothing Democrats, Batch, who claimed to be a “responsible gun owner,” called SB 50 a bill for “criminal carry” and a “public safety threat.” Sen.Natalie Murdock
(D-Chatham) called it the “freedom to kill bill.” Chitlik and others rehashed the “guns are the lead cause of child death” lie (which is buttressed by including gang homicide), further accusing legislators of “choosing death over life.” Sen. Michael Garrett (D-Guilford) described how the bill would afflict his children … while crying.
NC House action to come
Meanwhile, this week HB 5, “NC Constitutional Carry,” cleared the NC House yesterday, and is headed for a meeting of the Rules Committee on Monday at 4:00 PM.
Sponsored by Reps. Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort), Jay Adams (R-Catawba), Ben Moss (R-Moore), and Brian Echevarria (R-Cabarrus), is identical to SB 50 on issues concerning gun owners.
GRNC will soon put out an alert asking gun rights supporters to pack the committee as anti-gun activists did in the House Judiciary 2 Committee meeting on the bill yesterday. Come on out, folks! As GRNC VP Sean Sorrentino notes, you might get the joy of seeing one of the “Commie Mommies” ejected for screaming at legislators as happened today!

Dear Representative:
To date, 29 states have supported and passed the permit less (Constitutional) Carry law. Much research has been done on this issue, States with constitutional carry “Right To Carry” laws have been shown to lower violent gun crimes rates in these states. North Carolina can join in this data with our own permit-less carry law. With this law, gun owners will still have to meet the same criteria as law abiding citizens with carry permits, but without the need for a “permission slip” and the fee to exercise a constitutional right.
We are urging you to support this legislation and make North Carolina, the Great Old North State, part of the progressing constitutionally sound states respecting the integrity of their citizens’ right to carry peacefully and responsibly. The outlaws already have an abundance of weaponry at their disposal, we need to make sure our good law-abiding citizens have a way to protect themselves and their families.
As always, I will be monitoring your actions through the efforts of the Grass Roots NC legislative alerts and whether you stood with us on this important issue.
As you may also imagine, gun voters will come out to defend Republican supporters of HB50 who represent districts who have a marginal majority of support in November.
