GRNC Alert 06-02-15: Is the NC House Going to Sell Out Gun Owners?

The House May Cave to Bloomberg …

Despite the good progress that House Bill 562 has made (thanks in no small part to your help), there’s good reason to believe that the House may strip the bill of the critical provision to repeal the Jim Crow-era pistol purchase permit provision. To add insult to injury, the medical privacy provisions may also be watered down. This is a huge step backward for the safety of our state and the protection of our Constitutional rights.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!

CALL AND EMAIL HOUSE SPEAKER TIM MOORE:

If at all possible, make phone calls at 8:30 AM tomorrow (Wednesday). In any case, please make the call: 919-733-3451

Tell him that removing the pistol permit purchase repeal and weakening the medical privacy provisions is completely unacceptable.

Send the following copy/paste email message to this address: Tim.Moore@ncleg.net

Dear Speaker Moore:

Gun voters have been among your greatest supporters. We have stood with you even as House Bill 562 (“Second Amendment Affirmation Act”) stalled in your chamber and suffered weakening amendments.

But now I understand that the GOP caucus is allowing the repeal of our Jim Crow-era pistol purchase permit law to be stripped from the bill, or allowing it to pass with a “compromise” leaving parts of the system in place. I also understand that recent versions of the bill have watered down its medical privacy provisions, rendering them nearly worthless. For example, it would still be possible for politically-motivated healthcare providers to query children on gun ownership by parents.

But I was appalled when I learned you might rule floor amendments to the bill out of order, denying citizens a recorded vote identifying which legislators stand for or against gun-owning voters. That would be disrespectful to both citizens and the legislators making those amendments, Mr. Speaker. Worse, it gives cover to cowards. If legislators want to oppose us, they should vote the courage of their convictions on the House floor.

I strongly urge you to bring HB 562 out of the Rules Committee intact. But failing that, at least permit a fair and open debate of the bill on the House floor. Gun owners – your supporters – have earned at least that much. I will be monitoring the progress of HB 562 through Grass Roots North Carolina legislative alerts.

Respectfully,
