House Bill 174 (HB174) is currently working its way through the state legislature, and your help is needed to ensure that it doesn't get watered down. It seems that a small but vocal minority believe the Constitution is something that people need to explicitly opt into.

The current version of HB174 would allow law-abiding citizens with a concealed handgun permit (CHP) to carry a handgun onto school property when the property is being used for religious worship outside of the school's regular hours.

However, a small minority of anti-freedom zealots is trying to water down this bill by forcing schools to explicitly "opt in" to the recognition of this Natural right.

You read that correctly. There is a call for civil rights to be recognized and protected only when institutions overtly decide to recognize them. That turns the whole concept of "rights" on end. There is no precedent for this absurdity. Clearly, the anti-gun crowd is now resorting to making things up out of whole cloth in order to press their agenda.

This notion is only worthy of ridicule, not serious consideration. Yet, it has been proposed, so it must be addressed---and stopped.

Please reach out to your state House member and encourage him or her to support HB174 as it is currently written; without the 'opt-in.' See below.

Suggested Subject: "Pass H174 as Written. No 'Opt-in' for Constitutional Protection"

Dear Representative:

I am writing to encourage your support for HB174 as initially written, which would allow law-abiding citizens with a concealed handgun permit to carry a lawfully-possessed handgun onto a school property when it is being used as a place of religious worship outside of the school's regular hours.

Not only will North Carolina's citizens be able to protect themselves from deadly attacks, but they will also be at lower risk of having their firearm stolen from a vehicle, where they would currently have to store it during these religious services.

I understand that some opposed to gun rights are attempting to water down this bill by forcing schools to "opt in" to this Constitutional protection. This very notion is absurd, and any support for it would be seen as an anti-gun stance. No free person, or institution, needs to "opt in" to receive Constitutional guarantees and protections. Any law that would suggest otherwise is unacceptable.

I will continue to monitor this issue closely through Grass Roots North Carolina alerts.

As you know, GRNC is an all volunteer force. As such, we are looking for volunteers in a couple of areas:

Experience in web development to include HTML, CSS & Java Scripting. If interested, contact GRNC President using the following contact form: http://www.grnc.org/contact
Solid writing skills, ability to translate legal, political, technical and firearms jargon into layman's terms and make the public care about the issue. Ability to manipulate HTML style emails on the code level is a nice to have. If interested, please contact GRNC using this e-mail address: alert@grnc.org

If you have these skills, you can help the Second Amendment fight by enhancing and expanding GRNC’s presence, ensuring our message is received broadly in these modern times.

Don’t let your talents go to waste, as you could be the difference between gun-rights advancements and gun-rights losses.

Be the person who says, “I did something!” Instead of the person who says, “I should have done something.”
