SPEAKER DESTIN HALL LIES TO GUN VOTERS

|
Earlier in this session of the General Assembly, GRNC presented Speaker Destin Hall with a petition from thousands of gun voters demanding that North Carolinians be relieved of the need for governmental permission slips to carry concealed firearms for self-protection. Hall accepted the petition personally and PROMISED a floor vote for a permitless carry bill.
But last week, the NC House voted to override anti-gun Gov. Josh Stein’s vetoes on every bill EXCEPT SB 50 for permitless carry. This week, despite being about to adjourn until at least next fall and despite multiple attempts by GRNC to get a response from his office, NO VOTE IS FORTHCOMING.
In recent weeks, Hall said Republicans don’t have enough votes to pass SB 50. Yes, they lack the needed 3/5 supermajority by one vote, but the real problem lies with the Republican caucus and Hall’s failure to “whip” Republicans into unified support for the bill.
No doubt, you will hear that “we will lose legislators in marginal districts if they vote for permitless carry.” GRNC’s response is “bull$^!t.” Even beyond the fact that the legislature DREW those marginal districts; even beyond the fact that GRNC has told Rules Chair John Bell that our political action committee, the GRNC Political Victory Fund, will run cover for those legislators; even beyond the fact that those legislators ALREADY voted for equally controversial DEI and ICE bills; the fact remains that GUN VOTERS SENT THOSE LEGISLATORS TO RALEIGH TO DO A JOB AND WE EXPECT IT TO BE DONE.
For one thing, putting politicians on record with a floor vote has a wonderful way of “creating” supporters. And frankly, even if Hall doesn’t have the votes, we want to put legislators on record with a recorded floor vote in order to determine who our friends and enemies are. In other words, EVEN A FAILED VOTE IS BETTER THAN NO VOTE AT ALL – which would afford cowardly RINOs cover from gun voters.

The blame doesn’t fall on Democrats as much as your failure to unify Republicans behind Senate Bill 50. You have marshalled the Republican caucus to override all of Governor Stein’s other vetoes of controversial bills, including legislators in marginal districts, and we expect a floor vote to override this veto as well. Please send Senate Bill 50 to the floor for an override vote IMMEDIATELY.”
