WFAE Radio is hosting an “Understanding ‘Stand Your Ground’” Forum… |
The forum will be held Wednesday, May 16, from 7 – 8:30 pm in Pease Auditorium at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.
NOTICE: VENUE CHANGE for STAND YOUR GROUND FORUM
Please note: TOMORROW May 16th’s WFAE radio sponsored Forum has changed venue. The Forum has been moved from Pease Auditorium to Tate Hall (which is located in the Overcash Performing Arts Building), also on the main Central Piedmont Community College campus.
If you are not familiar with the campus venues, here is a link with directions and parking information (Tate Hall is in the same building as Halton Theatre):
http://tix.cpcc.edu/parking-directions
Please plan to arrive at the venue by 6:30 p.m.
Given the anti-“Stand Your Ground” firestorm that still rages following events in Florida – the flames of which have been effectively fanned by misleading media reports, it is ESSENTIAL that we respectfully make our pro-gun presence felt.
See the Immediate Action section below for sign-up information and instructions on how to effectively coordinate with other GRNC members.
Charlotte Hears You & Says It Will Not Seek Gun Restrictions! |
The volunteers of Grass Roots North Carolina have shot-down yet another municipal gun-ban trial balloon!
Enjoy your victory documented in the following letter received from Charlotte City Councilor, Warren Cooksey; but be ready to bring more pain if they deviate from the promises made below:
Mr. Valone,
In answer to your question, I can confidently state that the official answer is, “No, the City has not asked, nor does it plan to ask, for a local bill to circumvent any existing laws regarding lawful carriage of firearms.” As support, please note that no such provision is included in the City’s legislative agenda for the short session, which is available as attachment 3 on this page:
http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/CityClerk/CouncilRelated/Pages/04_09_12AgendaTOC.aspx.
The legislative agenda lists the only items that the City’s government relations manager is authorized to address on the City’s behalf. The City Council, not the Mayor, has the authority to establish the City’s legislative goals, so you should consider the matter put to rest.
Politics being politics, I will add that it’s always possible for an individual local elected official to attempt to make an end run around the Council in order to get a local bill on his own. However, given that any local bill introduced in the short session must have the unanimous support of our local legislative delegation, I’m also confident that no such attempt, if made, will be well received by the delegation.
I hope I’ve answered your question satisfactorily. Please share it with GRNC’s supporters, if you’d like.
Sincerely,
Warren Cooksey
Charlotte City Council
District 7
