DURHAM COUNTY IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO SHEDDING ITS JIM CROW LAWS |
THANK YOU!
Thanks to the hard work of Grass Roots North Carolina and its dedicated members, North Carolina Senate Bill 226 (to repeal Durham County’s Jim Crow-era gun registry) was favorably passed through the House Rules Committee speedily and without comment. The next stop for this bill is the house floor, where it must be passed into law to bring Durham County into the 21st century.
We know it’s been a hard slog to this point, but we can’t give up now. Your North Carolina house representative needs to hear from you, and needs to be told how important this legislation is. Without it, citizens across North Carolina are inadvertently being turned into criminals.
- Under the current law, anyone driving through Durham County with an unregistered firearm is guilty of a misdemeanor (even if they are not residents).
- Under the current law, anyone that sells a previously registered gun to someone outside of Durham County (or North Carolina, for that matter) still needs to register that sale with Durham County. Once a gun has been registered, every subsequent sale must be registered with the Durham County Sheriff.
These laws are rarely, if ever, enforced. Gun control proponents will tell you to just ignore these laws. But are you willing to risk a misdemeanor charge because of the whims of some Jim Crow sheriffs from the 1930’s?
We were also glad to see the NRA’s Anthony Roulette in attendance at today’s House Rules Committee meeting. Being in the second row was a long way from his support of Forsyth County Sheriff Schatzman and his anti-gun agenda in the recent election. We just hope that the NRA doesn’t try to take too much credit for a bill that Grass Roots North Carolina has worked tirelessly to champion.
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED! |
- Phone and email your North Carolina house representative. Tell them that you want Senate Bill 226 (to repeal Durham County’s gun registry) passed immediately. Jim Crow laws never had a place in North Carolina, and they especially don’t in 2014.

Suggested Subject: “It’s Time to Pass Senate Bill 226 to Repeal Durham’s Gun Registry“
Dear Representative:
As you’re undoubtedly aware, Senate Bill 226 is much-needed legislation to bring Durham County’s Jim Crow-era firearm registry to an end. A capricious law designed to allow sheriffs to discriminately persecute African Americans, it’s time has long passed and North Carolinians are ready to have Durham County brought into the 21st century.
I urge you to vote favorably for this bill on the house floor. North Carolinians of all ethnicities deserve no less.
I will continue to monitor this issue via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.
Respectfully,
