COMMISSION’S QUESTIONABLEMEETING SCHEDULE |
You may well remember back in August 2014 the Harnett County Commissioners attempted to float a previous version of this “Firearms Discharge Ban” on Harnett County Citizens. A GRNC Alert went out informing members of this matter and the Commissioners wisely tabled action at that time. Apparently, it was too close to an Election for some of them to make criminals of their fellow citizens.
Well, 2015 is here, and Harnett County Commissioners apparently no longer fear retribution at the ballot box. Last week they put back on their agenda a “take that!” measure to once again usurp private property rights, and put lawful citizens back in the cross hairs of a Deputy Sheriff’s Summons to appear in Court.
Tuesday, January 27th The Commissioners will hold a work session to further discuss this matter. They are aware their decision to proceed is controversial, and they want to gather the courage to go forward with it. Instead, give them a full measure of your objection to this issue once again. Let them know there will be consequences for treating gun owners as second class citizens.
They may yet proceed to a second vote, tentatively scheduled for a 9:00 AM Commissioner’s Meeting, on Monday, February 2nd. Let them know that to schedule this action at a time inconvenient for working men and women is cowardly at best; request they instead schedule it for their 7:00 PM Commissioner’s Meeting on February 16th, so they can see and listen to gun rights-supporting voters in force before they proceed to a vote.
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED! |
- Phone the Harnett County Commissioners before this Tuesday’s 9:00 AM Work Session. Use the phone numbers provided below, and ask the commissioners table this unacceptable “Firearms Discharge Ban” all together. If they won’t table it, insist that they schedule its 2nd Public Hearing for February 16th at 7:00 PM, when interested voters will have an opportunity to voice opinions on the matter, and not February 2nd at 9:00 AM, when most people are at work.
- Email the Harnett County Commissioners. Use the copy/paste email list below, and the copy/paste message provided under ‘Deliver This Message.’

Deliver This Message |
Suggested Subject: “No Firearms Discharge Ban”
Dear Harnett County Commissioners:
Last August, you wisely tabled action to legislate a prior Firearms Discharge Ordinance that few, if any in Harnett County wanted. Last week, you brought it back and tentatively passed it with a 4-1 majority, even after hearing citizen input asking that you not take such action.
Placing arbitrary restrictions on property holders, especially on such tenuous grounds as “size of lot” sets up this Commission, and ultimately the taxpayers to lengthy, expensive litigation for no practical effect. You have created for all intents and purposes an “entrapment” ordinance designed to punish a select few. Property owners may not even be aware of their violation, because they did not obtain the services of a surveyor or keep abreast of private enterprises such as Day Cares and Churches establishing services in their neighborhoods.
Please reconsider this dangerous and immoral assault on peoples’ liberties. I understand you will further discuss this ordinance and its ramifications at your Tuesday January 27th Work Session. I direct you to reconsider this measure and remove it from further consideration by the full Commission. Barring that, I insist you move the second Hearing of this matter to your meeting of February 16th, at 7:00 PM, so hard-working citizens can voice their opinions on this matter at a time that does not require them to sacrifice a day’s work. Sneaking this onto the agenda of the February 2nd meeting, at 9:00 AM, would surely be seen by the voters as ethically questionable.
Make no mistake: if this ordinance proceeds, I will go out of my way to see that those of you who vote in favor of this measure are replaced at election time. I understand three, a majority of the County Commission, will be up for reelection in 2016.
I will be following the Harnett Board of Commissioner’s actions closely through alerts issued by Grass Roots North Carolina.
Respectfully,
