WAKE COUNTY DENIES THE PUBLIC USE OF PUBLIC RANGE

YOU’RE PAYING FOR IT BUT YOU CAN’T USE IT!

With no warning, the Wake County Sheriff has unilaterally announced that the public will be denied access to the county’s public range. There has been no push back from the County Commission…

You read that right. The Wake County Range (the Firearms Education and Training Center), built for use by Wake County citizens is now being closed to the public, effective January 15, 2020. This comes as a huge surprise as Sheriff Baker, who manages the range through contractors he hires, gave no advanced warning of this decision. There was no public discussion, no prior announcement—not a thing.

The Sheriff contracts the management of the range, but Wake County owns it—that’s the taxpayers—that’s “the public!” Unfortunately, after the sheriff’s surprise announcement, there seems to have been no serious pushback from the commission. This range is a public range, and was originally chartered for public use, yet the public is to be denied access to this facility.

A letter from the county commission informs us of the pretense for closing the range to the public, stating: “lack of profitability and a review that fees and funds collected by RSM were not accounted for accurately.” The letter also cites something to do with timely deposits and reconciliations, but points out that these are not of any significance.

Ultimately, the commission makes it clear that they were not involved in the Sheriff’s decision, and suggested his decision may have been rash. However, the commission has taken no steps, nor made any announcements about what they intend to do about it. That’s not a good sign.

Below, see what you can do to demand answers.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: “The Public should be able to use a Publicly funded range”

Dear Sheriff Baker and Wake County Commissioners :

I am writing to express my outrage over the fact that the public is to be denied the use of Wake County’s public shooting range. Sheriff Baker’s rash decision is unacceptable, and I’m terribly disappointed to see that the county commissioners are not pushing back in any effective way. It is also suspect that the Sheriff decided to take this action during the height of the Christmas season, when most citizens are distracted with holiday activities.

The citizenry must be allowed access their own facility, which was originally chartered for public use. I’m demanding that this be rectified as soon as possible, and that a full explanation of how this happened in the first place be provided.

I will be monitoring your actions on this important matter through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,
