GRNC ALERT PURCHASE PERMIT REPEAL GETS HEARING TUESDAY

 

PURCHASE PERMIT REPEAL
 

North Carolina Gun Rights Supporters, we saw the last session of the legislature end with unfinished business.  Among the fruit left hanging was final REPEAL of our racist, Jim Crow Pistol Purchase Permit statute.   Although we secured legislative passage of Pistol Purchase Permit repeal in both the House and Senate, with the full support of the NC Sheriff’s Association we may add, Governor Cooper SPITEFULLY VETOED the bill (HB398) and an override vote was NOT attempted.

We at GRNC worked hard in our last election to elect the necessary supermajorities in both chambers to override Governor Cooper’s veto.   Our efforts resulted in a true Senate conservative supermajority and a “working conservative supermajority” in the House for the 2023-2024 Session.

Now for the good news:

SB40 – Pistol Purchase Permit Repeal has just been filed and we at GRNC thank its Primary Sponsors, Senators Britt, Daniel, and Perry.  On Tuesday, February 14th the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear the bill in preparation for securing its Senate chamber floor vote.

We ALL know the reasons why its time to repeal this unnecessary obstacle to purchasing a handgun in North Carolina, but here are just a few:
  • Its DEMONSTRABLY an INEFFECTIVE statute to begin with (Permits are good for 5 years, turned in at the time of sale with no record of the sale even kept by the Sheriff, and potentially allows  subsequently  disqualified purchasers to bypass NICS checks at the time of purchase)

  • It’s a statute rooted in racism and dependent upon one’s “good moral character”

  • It’s abused by Sheriffs to delay and deny permits even TODAY!

  • Its repeal is supported by the NC Sheriff’s Association
There should not be 100 possible variations for lawful North Carolinians to purchase a handgun to protect themselves and their loved ones.  Our current permit system is flawed, and yes, corrupt.  Due to flagrant abuse of the process, GRNC recently secured court orders against both the Wake and Mecklenburg County Sheriffs’ Departments to COMPEL THEIR COMPLIANCE to issue permits to lawful applicants.

The time to enact Pistol Purchase Permit Repeal is NOW!

Dear Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans:

Last session both the Senate and House passed repeal of our Jim Crow Pistol Purchase Permit.  (HB398) Despite the fact the NC Sheriff’s Association fully supported this repeal, Governor Cooper spitefully vetoed the bill. This session we have a conservative supermajority in the Senate and a “working conservative supermajority” in the House.  I direct any and all action be taken to override Governor Cooper’s attempt to veto this legislation again.
