After long and contentious debate, Senate Bill 50, “Freedom to Carry NC” has passed the North Carolina House by a vote of 59 to 48.
The bill was eloquently defended by Rep. Keith Kidwell (R- Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico, GRNC ****), Rep. Jay Adams (R-Catawba, GRNC ****), and
Rep. Brian Echevarria (R- Cabrarrus, ****).
In opposition: Rep. Ted Davis (R-New Hanover) made a series of garbled and factually incorrect objections to the bill, while Democrats Marcia Morey (D-Durham, 0-star), Tracy Clark
(D-Guilford, 0-star), Amos Quick (D-Guilford, 0-star), and Robert Reives (D-Chatham, Randolph, 0-star) gave long, impassioned litanies of dead teenagers, “triggering” suicides, and faux “statistics” in attacking the bill.
GRNC has not yet had a chance to completely asses the roll call for the vote (below), but future alerts will focus on those legislators, particularly Republicans who need attention.
GRNC President Paul Valone issued the following statement:
“We thank Republican leadership and the members of the NC General Assembly who sponsored and voted for Senate Bill 50, as well as its sister bill, House Bill 50. We realize that some members may have chosen not to be in attendance for the vote, and we will be channeling voter input to those legislators. Any Republican who opposes the wishes of the voters who elected him will pay a price in 2026. We have every confidence we can muster the votes needed to over-ride Governor Josh Stein’s inevitable veto.”
