GRNC Alert 03-10-18: Greensboro City Council Plans To Break The Law! And Victory in King!

GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL PLANS TO SHUT DOWN GREENSBORO GUN SHOW

Greensboro’s City Council is one again proving that municipal governments need to be scrutinized closely and kept in check. Earlier this week, Greensboro’s mayor Nancy Vaughan announced that, in keeping with the gun grabber’s tradition of opportunism in the wake of tragedy, she wanted to stop allowing the Greensboro Gun & Knife Show to be hosted at the Greensboro Coliseum. Media reports indicate that other City Council members are on board with this plan.

Putting aside the mayor’s plan to turn millions of dollars of lawful commerce away from Greensboro, her plan is also unlawful. According to North Carolina’s general statute § 14-409.40, “…no county or municipality … shall regulate in any manner the … sale … of firearms, firearms ammunition, [or] components of firearms …” Imagine — the city’s Coliseum building, paid for by YOUR tax dollars, being wielded as an instrument of this City Council’s anti-freedom agenda!

Fortunately, YOU have the power to stop the City from egregiously breaking the law. See the Immediate Action section below.

VICTORY IN KING

Recently, Andy Stevens, GRNC’s Director of Local Government Affairs, spoke before the King City Council to bring to their attention the “no guns” signage posted at a city park. Such signs are a violation of state law, so Stevens asked the council to correct or remove them. Weeks later, no corrective action had yet been taken.

On March 5th, Stevens again addressed the city council. This time, he informed them, should the illegal signage not be corrected, the city would be facing a lawsuit, a costly lawsuit they cannot win. GRNC is willing to do what it takes to help our state’s citizens protect themselves and their families. Since 1950, “gun-free” zones have been the site of all but two of the mass shootings in the United States. The city proclaimed their park to be such a zone, causing everyone there, men, women and children, to stand out to any maniac looking for a soft target. But not any longer … The day after Stevens issued GRNC’s second warning to King’s city officials, GRNC received the following email correspondence from the city manager:

Andy,

The signs in question have been removed, and new signage will be installed once the signs are received from the manufacturer.  I assure you that we are working to get the new signs installed as quickly as possible. […]

Thank you,
Homer Dearmin
City Manager

Yes, the gun-buster signs are gone! Score another gun rights victory for GRNC!

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!

  • Plan to attend the next City Council meeting, which is being held on March 20, 2018 at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers located in City Hall’s Melvin Municipal Office Building at 300 W. Washington St., Greensboro, NC. Members of the public are permitted to speak for 3 minutes.

* At the time this alert was published, the Greensboro government’s website was down. If you experience trouble reaching them, please keep trying.

Suggested Subject:

“Stop Obstructing Lawful Commerce!”

Dear Mayor and City Council,

It has recently come to my attention that the City of Greensboro is looking to obstruct the lawful commerce that is conducted through the Greensboro Gun Shows that are hosted in the city coliseum. You are undoubtedly aware that this is not only an unlawful regulation of commerce, but that this would turn millions of dollars in lawful commerce away from the city

As one of North Carolina’s many law-abiding gun owners that enjoys patronizing and spending money at local gun shows, I insist that that the city council immediately curtail any plans to move forward with this ill-conceived (and illegal) plan.

I will be monitoring the city’s actions on this matter through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,
