| Senate Agrees to GRNC Changes on SB 594 |
As we’ve reported in the past, Senate Bill 594 (the “Omnibus Justice Amendments”) contains a provision that would increase the penalties for unpermitted citizens (who are not in possession of a valid Concealed Handgun Permit) convicted of carrying a concealed handgun. Criminalizing the otherwise lawful carrying of a firearm on bureaucratic technicalities is disingenuous, to say the least.
Thankfully, Senators Berger Sr., Newton and Goolsby have given this bill thoughtful consideration and have arrived at the compromise that we can all agree to: the existing penalty for the first offense will remain a Class 2 Misdemeanor, while the penalty for the second offense increases to a Class H Felony.
We thank these Senators for their good judgment, and we invite you to contact Representatives Thom Tillis, Tim Moore and your house member and encourage them to support the Senate bill in conference committee.
