RALEIGH MAY ADVANCE GUN RIGHTS ‘CLASS SYSTEM’ |
A bill just introduced in the North Carolina Senate seeks to congeal what has slowly become the two distinct classes of gun ownership: the elite, political class, and the less worthy “common” class.
Initially, it was district attorneys and judges, and now Senate Bill 78 would provide for off-duty correctional officers to carry concealed weapons without a permit–something you can’t do. It has also come to GRNC’s attention that a House bill will likely be introduced soon to allow for concealed carry by politicians and staff in legislative buildings–something else you can’t do!
Which Class Are You In?
If you’re in the political class, then good for you! The State Legislature is pulling out all the stops to fast-track bills so you can protect yourself and your family without all that pesky paperwork and the boundaries that the common class is subjected to. Why, after all, should the state’s general citizenry, the people who pay the salaries of the government employees, be on par with the “political class” of gun owners?
In Support of Law Enforcement
Make no mistake, GRNC is 100% supportive of law enforcement. In fact, correctional officers, judges and DAs, as well as legislators and their staff carrying defensive handguns would be nothing but positive. Yet, there ought not be two classes of citizenry in an ostensibly free state. True justice demands that legislation relieve all law-abiding adults from stifling and dangerous gun control measures, not just a privileged few. While correctional officers and legislators ought to be able to protect themselves as they see fit, so should, custodial staff, programmers, teachers, moms-on-the-go, doctors and anyone else that has a unique and precious life (or lives) to protect.
We were all created equal, with certain unalienable rights, but politicians in Raleigh may be trying to tell us that some are “more equal” than others. Below, see how you can easily contact NC Senate leadership to ask them why they would legislate to create two classes of gun ownership in North Carolina.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE
Suggested Subject: “No Class System for Gun Rights”
Dear Senator:
It has just come to my attention that Senate Bill 78 seeks to lift permit restrictions on the carry of concealed weapons. Unfortunately, I also learned that this bill will apply to correctional officers, but not to the general citizenry. I also understand another bill may soon be introduced that would free legislators and staff to carry handguns in legislative buildings.
I find it quite disconcerting that our representatives in Raleigh are proposing bills that seek to create two classes of gun ownership: the politically connected class, and the common class; the common class, of course living under a more stringent set of rules. I think you would agree that rights are for everyone. Doctors and nurses as well as politicians. Stay-at-home moms and correctional officers alike.
If rules regarding concealed carry in North Carolina are going to be lifted or relaxed, I must insist that this be done for all law-abiding citizens, not just those who run in elite circles. We were all created equal, and we all possess the same rights. I simply ask that you recognize this truth, and not legislate to make some “more equal” than others.
I will continue to monitor this important issue via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.
Respectfully,
