GRNC Alert 04-03-15: County Considers Firearms Ordinance

GUN ORDINANCE UNDER CONSIDERATION

Recently, a vigilant GRNC Member pointed out that Caswell County had “firearms prohibited” signs on county buildings, even though Caswell County has no ordinance allowing for such postings. Fortunately, once the County Commissioners were informed of this fact by GRNC, they saw to it that the illegal signs were removed.

At their March 16th meeting this matter was discussed by the Commissioners and a decision was made to draft a new firearms ordinance. Although it appears the Commissioners are in favor of allowing lawful concealed carry in county buildings, it seems that they may still ban legal firearms in portions of county parks.

Aside from the fact that enacting partial restrictions, restrictions based on time and activity, would be tedious and impractical, it also appears that their draft language may not fully comply with state law.

Important Meeting this Monday

This measure to enact a new ordinance will be voted on during the next meeting, this Monday, April 6th, at 6:30 PM. Although the commissioners seem to be on the right track, the new ordinance still may include a partial gun ban—but it doesn’t have to.

Commissioners Need Your Feedback

Your feedback and support are essential to encourage the commissioners to do the right thing, and remind them where law-abiding gun owners stand on this issue. Below, see what you can do to steer the new ordinance in the right direction, and also help its passage.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: “Vote ‘Yes’ on Gun Rights

Dear Caswell County Commissioner:

I have just been informed that the Caswell County Commission intends to vote in favor of gun rights on April 6th, and I am writing to express my full support for this position.

I strongly urge you to resist the temptation to create a patchwork of “gun-free zones” in county parks, zones based tediously on variables like activity and time of day. Dangerous “gun free zones” serve only to make accidental criminals out of otherwise peaceful, law-abiding citizens, while doing nothing to ensure safety. Even Mecklenburg and Guilford Counties saw the folly in trying to do so and opened their parks, at all times and places, to lawful concealed carry.

This past year, more than a dozen North Carolina counties have opened county buildings and property to lawful concealed carry. Most recently, Union County opened all of its facilities to the practice. A decision to trust Caswell County’s citizens and fellow North Carolinians to act responsibly and lawfully is to be commended, and it’s the right thing to do.

Thank you in advance for doing the right thing this Monday evening by voting for an ordinance that allows lawful concealed carry of handguns in all Caswell County parks and buildings. I will continue to monitor this issue through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,
