THE ‘STRIP SEARCH’ SOCIETY |
In a world where gun-buster signs have kept no one safe in theaters, the Regal Entertainment Group acts fast to make things worse . . .
Odds are, you’ve already heard about the Regal Entertainment Group’s new TSA-style policy. Clearly, the cinema chain’s effort to render peaceful moviegoers helpless by posting gun-buster signs was protecting no one. Therefore, going forward, Regal theaters will be searching customers’ bags and purses to make 100% sure these law-abiding, paying customers are entirely defenseless.
Of course, disarming the innocent and sending them to a dark, crowded room with few exits doesn’t seem like the best security plan, but knee-jerk reactions to tragedies are rarely well thought-out.
Note that James Holmes, the Colorado theater shooter, bought a ticket and walked into the theater empty-handed. He then proceeded to prop open an exit door in order to surreptitiously bring in his weapons. In fact, a simple thought experiment informs us that if a disturbed person is determined to attack theatergoers, there isn’t much to stop him from overpowering theater personnel, who are busy searching the harmless patrons, and continuing on with his deranged business.
The ‘Strip Search’ Society
Although it is extremely important, reduced safety isn’t the only disadvantage contained within Regal’s new policy. This policy is also an affront to personal privacy and dignity. Too often now, ostensibly free American citizens are finding themselves the subjects of such degradations under the pretext of tighter security. Thanks to Regal Cinemas, you can now add “date night” to the growing list of places where having fun feels more like being “booked” down at the precinct. Where will it end?
Most likely, this sort of thing will end when paying customers close their wallets, and promise to leave them that way until their dignity is respected, and their safety is no longer put at risk by feel-good, but useless gestures like signs and intrusive searches.
Below, you’ll see a list of theaters around the state where paying customers can expect the TSA treatment before hitting the popcorn counter. Also below, see how you can contact the Regal Entertainment Group to let them know you will be taking your business elsewhere until they rescind their policy of treating paying customers like air travelers on a watch list.

Suggested Subject: “Stop TSA-style Searches at Regal Cinemas”
Dear Regal Entertainment and NATO Leadership:
I have recently been informed of Regal Entertainment Group’s new policy regarding TSA-style searches of patrons’ bags. I am very troubled by this new policy, and I for one refuse to suffer the indignity of being searched at a movie theater. “Date night” is no place for this sort of humiliation.
Furthermore, insuring that innocent and peaceful theatergoers are defenseless does nothing to protect them. Those who are fixated on hurting others are never deterred by feel-good security measures, but rather use those very measures to their advantage. We’ve seen this time and time again.
In the twenty-first century, consumers have more entertainment choices than ever before. As long as Regal Cinemas, or any other theater group, chooses to search its customers, I will be taking my business elsewhere. Supporting a movie theater that doesn’t respect personal safety choices, and foists TSA-style indignity on to its customers is not what I call entertainment.
I will continue to monitor this issue through alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.
