Yesterday, yet another violent sociopath committed murder in yet another ostensibly “gun-free” zone, this time Caudill Laboratories on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. As elsewhere, the murderer not only ignored the prohibition, but might plausibly have been drawn by it. |
Within minutes of the corresponding 9-1-1 call, more than 50 police vehicles and even helicopters swarmed the campus. That, of course, didn’t help Professor Zijie Yan, who was already dead. Meanwhile, students and faculty had few options but to spend hours desperately trying to barricade themselves under tables and in bathrooms as they followed UNC protocol to “shelter in place.” Ironically, one of my volunteers, a highly trained concealed carry practitioner, had left the area of the shooting less than 30 minutes prior. But even if he’d been present, he couldn’t have prevented further carnage…
